Private Andrew Troup honoured for his courage [22/07/09]

Private Andrew Troup of 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment has been recognised in front of his battalion, friends and family for his courage during a battle with the Taliban in Afghanistan, courage for which he received a Mention in Despatches.

Pte Troup was on patrol with soldiers from the Afghan National Army when they came under attack from the Taliban. Some of the inexperienced Afghan soldiers fled to cover. His MiD citation then reads: "Despite heavy fire Private Troup broke cover, sprinting to where they had gone to ground. Through strength of character, a powerful and

courageous display of determination - brought them back into the fight. This single act of bravery allowed the Afghans to regain composure and have the will to fight."

Private Troup said of the parade at the Battalion's base in Germany: "It's great getting my Iraq medal today and having my MiD read out and recognised in front of the Battalion."

Well done, Andrew!

Thousands cheer the Tigers in Canterbury [18/07/09]

Soldiers back from Afghanistan and Iraq were welcomed home on Saturday by a cheering crowd of thousands as they marched through the streets of Canterbury.
More than 200 troops from the 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment (1 PWRR) took part in the eighth and final march in a series of homecoming parades they have taken part in over the past week.

Led by the Regiment's red-coated Kohima Band, the soldiers marched through the cathedral city's cobbled streets as crowds cheered and waved banners and Union flags to welcome them home.

Soldiers from 1 PWRR, known as the Tigers, were the last to serve in Basra having returned at the end of May, whilst another contingent returned from Afghanistan earlier this year.

Private Colin White and Private Daniel Hudson, both 19 and from Canterbury, received operational tour medals in recognition of services in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Well done, the Tigers! Well done, Canterbury!

Sunset Vigil: a soldier's poem for the fallen [18/07/09]

Staff Sergeant Andrew McFarlane is serving in Afghanistan. He wrote this poem after hearing of the deaths of eight fellow soldiers.

Sunset Vigil

The news is spread far and wide
Another comrade has sadly died
A sunset vigil upon the sand
As a soldier leaves this foreign land

We stand alone, and yet as one
In the fading light of a setting sun
We've all gathered to say goodbye
To our fallen comrade who's set to fly

The eulogy's read about their life
Sometimes with words from pals or wife
We all know when the CO's done
What kind of soldier they'd become

The padre then calls us all to pray
The bugler has Last Post to play
The cannon roars and belches flame
We will recall, with pride, their name

A minute's silence stood in place
As tears roll down the hardest face
Deafening silence fills the air
With each of us in personal prayer

Reveille sounds and the parade is done
The hero remembered, forgotten by none
They leave to start the journey back
In a coffin draped in the Union Jack

The Elizabeth Cross: but not for the wounded [01/07/09]

For too long campaigners have been urging that some tangible, permanent recognition be awarded to the families of servicemen and women who have given their lives in the service of their country; today the Queen has approved a new medal that will do just that.

It was back in 2007 that the Mirror launched its "Honour the Brave" campaign for the awarding of a special medal to soldiers killed or wounded in battle in Iraq and Afghanistan.

By early 2008 the campaign had the backing of politicians and the top brass - only the MoD opposed it and were accused of dragging their feet

Now, almost two years later, it has been agreed that the Elizabeth Cross and an accompanying scroll will be awarded to the families of those who have died in conflicts since 1945 in recognition of the debt the nation owes them.

Sadly, as seems so often to be the case, the wounded continue to be ignored.

Servicemen wounded during WW1 & WW2 received the "wounded stripe". The US awards her wounded a Purple Heart medal. But those members of Britain's Armed Forces who are wounded on the battlefield - often seriously, their lives shattered - will not be receiving an Elizabeth Cross. This omission needs to be rectified.

"The Battalion has been hit very hard by Paul's death; the collective sense of grief is tangible, and we have learned over the past few weeks that grief has a time and a place. He chose this life and lived it with a passion; he died prematurely, but he died doing what he loved."

Tribute to Jordan Rossi from the Malt Shovel [28/05/09]

Since the beginning of the year regulars at the Malt Shovel pub in Baildon, West Yorks, have been collecting money for Help For Heroes - an amazing £40,000 so far in fact.

When last Saturday the sad news came that one of their drinking partners, Jordan Rossi, had been killed clearing IEDs in Helmand, their fundraising took on a more personal aspect.

Michel Bray, the pub landlord, said: "Our boys are over there doing their job - a very difficult job, a very dangerous job. A lot of them getting injured.... also killed.... really brings it home and makes you really appreciate just how good we have it compared to the young men who are out there in Afghanistan and other places fighting for us."
